Beijing Summer Olympics 2008 officially starts at 08.08.08

The 2008 Summer Olympic Games, officially known as the Games of the XXIX Olympiad is a Summer Olympics event, that will be held in Beijing, People’s Republic of China from August 8 to August 24, 2008 and followed by the 2008 Summer Paralympics from September 6 to September 17. 10,500 athletes are expected to compete in 302 events in 28 sports, just one event more than was on the schedule of the 2004 games. The 2008 Beijing Olympics will also mark the third time that Olympic events will have been held in the territories of two different National Olympic Committees (NOC): at the 2008 Olympics, equestrian events will be held in Hong Kong, which competes separately from mainland China.

Sisters shine on semis day

The WIlliamses marched on to set up a third family final, while Germany’s Rainer Schuettler overcame his fellow non-seed Arnaud Clement in a marathon match spread over five hours and two days.

Venus and Serena Williams dodged rain delays and second-set fightbacks by their respective opponents to set up a family affair on ladies’ singles final day. As their fellow seeds have dropped one by one, the sisters have looked more and more convincing, and on Thursday they even advanced by similar scorelines.

Defending champion Venus completed her 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) win over Elena Dementieva without interruption from the weather, but the Russian fifth seed might have been praying for the heavens to open during the first set of their match.

After electing to serve first – an intriguing choice given the scrutiny of her weak delivery over the years – Dementieva was broken by Williams in the first game. Had she been able to convert one of four chances for an immediate break back, the match may have been very different. Instead, the Russian only just managed to get on to the scoreboard in the opener.
